Hello -

I downloaded 2.14.0 and was blasted w/a number of popups, etc. Virus installed in Chrome (where I did the download) and subsequent scans found other virus programs.

Has anyone encountered this problem?

Where did you download it? Always download the software directly from the official page, in this case winmerge.org there is a direct download link there. Sometimes there are other providers such as CNET which also provide the software but includes adware. Maybe this is the case.

Just downloaded WinMerge 2.14.0 from http://winmerge.org/downloads/
It is infected, silently installing adware.

I rather believe what VirusTotal says:

This file was last analysed by VirusTotal on 2015-02-24 19:19:40 UTC, it was first analysed by VirusTotal on 2013-02-04 03:32:19 UTC.

A couple of months ago a colleague of mine got infected after installing WinMerge.
Sourceforge is known to inject malware into the executable they host. See for example
http://blog.tedd.no/2014/11/25/sourceforge-malware/
http://thecomputerpeeps.com/2013/08/sou ... e-malware/

I recently got a new pc at work and would really like to install WinMerge, but as long as the executables are hosted on Sourceforge I won't...

It is Sourceforge... they injected some kind of unwanted software into winmerge installer... during installation these extra softwares are selected by default... unsuspecting users will just press 'Next' without even reading what is being installed.

I have stopped downloading anything from soureforge... I just downloaded winmerge from here: http://winmerge.en.softonic.com/ (but be AWARE.. softonic is also known to add adware into their installers.. so BE CAREFUL!)

Damn I just downloaded from sourceforge and got a virus warning. That's messed up, all these people installing malware, viruses and adware are so sneaky. Where can I download winmerge that doesn't have any viruses/

The same here. I've just tried to download WinMerge 2.16.2 from the official site. And apparently, my antivirus got mad, cause it sent an alert and then the browser just froze. I rebooted the PC and everything seems to be working normally. But I don't want to repeat the process again. How can I download the WinMerge without a virus?

Personally I have never experienced it but you should consider scanning your device with something like Malwarebytes to be sure. If anyone is using softonic then I want to ask one thing that how safe Softonic is?

I have downloaded WinMerge-2.14.0-Setup.exe from http://winmerge.org

Avast 2015.10.0.2208, virus definitions 150208-1, is reporting the downloaded file as:
Win32:Rootkit-gen

Edit: Can anyone confirm this to be a problem, should I stick to avast or move to one of these https://techloris.com/best-antivirus/

P.S: Why does Avast report a virus on the file when trying to download it?
