Different Appearance of compared files

when comparing text files, they are normally displayed as the file you would also see in an editor. Sometimes, when comparing files I need for a slide show program, five lines originally may look like this:

When seeing these lines in WM for comparison, they are shown like this:

Not to mention that of course the entire file is displayed this way.

Does anybody have a clue if and how I can switch to a view where these '(00)'s are omitted? Have already checked a lot of different settings in WM without success, and I guess the problem is rather sitting in front of the computer than in the code of the program...

Thanks in advance.

just an interisting update - I have copied the entire file content into a blank original txt-file, and the display was then without these nasty (00)s. Have to say that again I have no idea why this is the case. If there's anybody who wants to explore this effect more in detail, feel free to drop a mail, and I can send you the concerned files.
Have a nice day.

Your files are UTF-16 without BOM, which WinMerge 2.x does not recognize. Try WinMerge 2011.
