XML comparing - child elements

Postby goc_man » Sun Jun 05, 2016 6:05 am

Hi all, this is my first post. A have a question, and would really appreciate ‎some help.

Can WinMerge omit separate differences from subchild elements and mark a whole child element instead?
I'm comparing two large XMLs which have the same structure and very similar data. But there are lots of little differences in some of the elements. When comparing I don't want WinMerge to mark every single difference. I just want to know whether a whole child element is different in any way.

Here's an example: The XMLs have a structure like this
<Library>
<Book>
<Index>1</Index>
<Author>Some Guy</Author>
<Year/>1987</Year>
<Edition/>5th</Edition>
</Book/>
....
....
</Library>

In the other XML file i have this:
<Library>
<Book>
<Index>1</Index>
<Author>Different Guy</Author>
<Year/>1987</Year>
<Edition/>8th</Edition>
</Book>
...
...
</Library>
*Notice that everything is the same except the Author and Edition.

Now I don't want WinMerge to mark "<Author>Some Other Guy</Author>" and "<Edition/>6th</Edition>" as differences.
I want it to mark the whole section <Book>...</Book> or just the tag <Book> to indicate there is a difference here. I don't care for the specifics, I just want WinMerge to tell me "This <Book> is different in some way, let's find the next <Book> that is different."

Thanks in advance.
