I think I got this working. See http://forums.winmerge.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=352&p=1392#p1392 for a screenshot.

We compare code changes in a large peer review group around a conference table. Printing just the changes would save reams of paper over printing the entire code with changes highlighted. Our company therefore uses another program for this meeting (that is not as good as WinMerge). So I have to use separate programs.

This functionality often comes with a "show X lines above and below the change", so the change can be seen in context. It seems like a small feature: when printing, parse down the file, and send to the printer only the lines around and including the change, then a space, then parse on....

Thanks for a great program, otherwise!!

thanks alot

I thought the role of a developer was to support the users (at least that's what I try to do).
I have 2 files of 366163 lines each and only 7904 with differences. It would DEFINITELY be easier to view only those lines.
The functionality is available in Beyond Compare and would be a very nice feature for WinMerge.
It would also be nice to generate reports based on the compares.

It's 2017 and you guys still haven't implemented this feature??

I am trying to find differences in sql dumps which have hundreds thousands of lines. Winmerge can't put me in the exact position that is highlighted.
A feature like "Only show differences" would greatly improve my winmerge experience.

OK, I know this is an old thread, but....Seriously, you don't see how showing "just differences" is valuable? Here's a couple of reasons just off the top of my head: 1. Documenting changes 2. Isolating common changes while ignoring all other lines with the same token 3. simply being able to focus quickly on a set of changes and sight verify 4. Being able to quickly and efficiently screen print a set of changes and share with a colleague.

The tool is actually called "winMERGE", as part of a MERGE you want to focus on changes, not what's similar.

BTW, great tool, even with this one horrible flaw. I use it just about every day.

OK, I know it is perhaps too much to ask of people these days, but... Seriously, read the thread before posting, or at least the most recent page, or the documentation it references. I can think of a couple ways you could have discovered this feature has already been implemented just off the top of my head: 1. Read the thread in which you wrote your post 2. Look in the obvious spot for the feature when using the application, the View menu 3. Read the release notes, which can be accessed via the Help menu in the app 4. Read the FAQ which this thread is about - surely the FAQ has been updated in the past 10 years since this thread was started, it now clearly states how to use the feature (I've quoted the FAQ answer below so we don't get anymore posts of people stating why they think this feature needs to be implemented when it was implemented 8 years ago), and 5. Read the Help, accessible from the Help menu in the application.

3.5. Can I hide similar lines in a file comparison, so that only different lines are visible?

Yes, you can show only different lines by clicking View → Diff Context → 0 lines.

This feature was implemented 8 YEARS AGO, as a part of the change it was announced in THIS THREAD. You'd think one would reference the documentation on the website, or included in the application, when looking for a feature of an app they use just about every day. Probably before coming the forums for an answer, but if one came to the forum for the answer instead wouldn't one read the thread before posting? Well, clearly the answer to these questions is nope...

6 is folks requesting a feature that already exists, in the thread where it was said that it was implemented is enough. If I was a mod, I'd lock this thread now, and maybe edit the OP with a notice that the requested feature was implemented and link to the FAQ.
