Optimize program descriptions in PAD file

I think we should optimize the program descriptions in the PAD file:

Description (80 chars) wrote:WinMerge is side-by-side difference display and merge, for files or directories

Description (250 chars) wrote:WinMerge is a tool for visual difference display and merging, for both files and directories. Unicode support. Flexible syntax coloring editor. Windows Shell integration. Regexp filtering. Side-by-side line diff. Highlights differences inside lines.

WinMerge has Unicode support, Flexible syntax coloring editor, and Windows Shell integration. Regexp filtering for filenames and lines. Side-by-side line difference and highlights differences inside lines. A file map shows the overall file differences in a location pane. The user interface is translated into several languages.

Description (2000 chars) wrote:WinMerge is a tool for visual difference display and merging, for both files and directories. It is highly useful for determining what has changed between file versions, and then merging those changes. WinMerge has Unicode support, Flexible syntax coloring editor, Visual SourceSafe integration, and Windows Shell integration. Regexp filtering for filenames and lines. Side-by-side line difference and highlights differences inside lines. A file map shows the overall file differences in a location pane. The user interface is translated into several languages.

I miss some keywords like free, open source and folders (instead directories). Are all new features included? Can we wrote the descriptions fresher and easier/simpler?

Should we first collect important keywords, we want in the text?

Fully agreed. Its time to refresh these descriptions.

Collecting keywords / features is a good start. The shortest version should contain at least the keywords you mention above. Some other keywords / features:
  • Unicode support
  • Shell Integration
  • 64-bit Windows support
  • File / line filtering
  • Editing of files (Flexible editor currently)
  • Regular expressions in filters
  • Translations
  • File map (location pane)
  • Archive file support

Hmm, this starts to sound like WinMerge feature list in homepage.

There is a Wikipedia article about Comparison of file comparison tools which compare the following features:

  • GUI
  • CLI
  • Scripting
  • Horizontal / Vertical
  • Show Δ < whole line
  • 3-way comparison
  • Directory comparison
  • Binary comparison
  • Merge
  • Syntax Highlighting
  • Reports
  • ZIP support
  • FTP support
  • Version Control browsing
  • Patch creation
  • Patch application
  • Patch preview
  • Unicode support

Maybe this is important for users and we should add the supported features to the description?

If we look at the Windows File Comparison page from the Open Directory Project many projects use words like visual or visually in there description. Seems important!

That is interesting list and we can get some hints from it. But definitely we don't take that list as is. We are trying to describe WinMerge, not make WinMerge fit to some list. E.g. I don't understand why list has patch preview feature. If there is visual diff, it cannot differ from generated patch. And additional info patch adds just isn't interesting for the user. So completely made-up feature. Or, maybe it is important for some programs which have those fancy and weird ways to present diffs and there is no easy way to see what lines match. But WinMerge does not need it.
