Improve compare options GUI?

Postby kimmov » Thu Jul 09, 2009 8:41 pm

Compare options aren't very well organized in options-dialog. I've been trying to find out how to clarify them but it doesn't seem to be easy. Because some options affect both folder/file compare, some only folder or file compare. And some are dependent on compare method. And of course compare method selection really affects only to folder compare... :)

Maybe first step is to split options to two pages:
  • General compare options
  • Folder compare specific options
From current options general options are:
  • whitespace
  • ignore blank lines
  • ignore EOL
  • ignore case
  • filter comments
  • enable moved block detection
  • match similar lines
and folder compare specific options are:
  • ignore time differences less than 3 seconds
  • file compare method
  • stop after first diff
I did consider adding third page for file compare specific options but I think only two options (enable moved block detection and match similar lines) are purely file compare specific. So it probably is not worth the trouble.

Three options for folder compare isn't much. But I'm planning to add two new options very soon:
  • include unique folders contents
  • size limit for quick compare

Sounds like a good idea! Hopefully hierarchical like the new color options? :)

I think it would be more consistent, if we have also a "file compare" page. Even if we have currently only two options!

Hmm. Perhaps so... Maybe it is good second step then. :)

You could rename the new page 'Folder and File Compare', containing two groups: 'Folder Compare' and 'File Compare'.
That would give the file options a home, and still be logically distinct from General Compare.

Interesting idea. But I'm afraid that becomes too long as category name and translated strings in many languages are even longer.
